[Intro]

 G  D7  G

[Verse 1]

     G    Gdim7  G            C   Cdim   C
On a hill far  away stood an old rugged cross
    D7                      G
The emblem of suffering and shame
      G         Gdim7  G               C       Cdim  C
And I love that old   cross where the dearest and  best
      D7                        G
For a world of lost sinners was slain

[Chorus]

        D7                     G
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross
        C                      G     D7
Till my trophies at last I lay down
           G            G7         C     Am7
And I will cling to the old rugged cross
      G              D7        G      D7
And exchange it some day for a crown

[Verse 2]

       G   Gdim7  G            C    Cdim  C
To the old rugged cross I will ever be   true
    D7                        G
Its shame and reproach gladly bear
           G       Gdim7  G         C    Cdim  C
Then he'll call me some  day to my home far away
          D7                 G
Where his glory forever I'll share

[Chorus 2]

         D7                     G
And I'll cherish the old rugged cross
        C                      G     D7
Till my trophies at last I lay down
           G            G7         C     Am7
And I will cling to the old rugged cross
      G              D7        G      D7
And exchange it some day for a crown
       G            G7         C     Am7
I will cling to the old rugged cross
      G              D7        C       G
And exchange it some day for a crown
