“I Can’t Help It If I’m Still In Love With You” (D)
Hank Williams. Story is, Hank Williams walked into Fred
Rose’s office in Nashville, laid a sheaf of songs on his desk,
and said he hoped Rose would sign him to a contract or
something. Rose said “Who wrote these.” “I did, sir.”
Shuffling through the songs, Rose said he doubted Williams
had written these. Williams told him he was always writing
songs, they just sort of came to him. Rose asked if he could
prove he could write by writing one right now. Williams
paused a second, said, “I think so.” So Rose got up, said
I’m going for a cup of coffee - be back in 15 minutes.
Write me a song.”
When Rose came back, Williams picked up a guitar standing
in the corner, hit a chord, and sang this song - which he had
written on the fly in less that 15 minutes.
It went right to the top of the charts.
Today I passed you on the street
And my heart fell at your feet
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
Somebody else stood by your side
And he looked so satisfied
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
A picture from the past came slowly stealing
As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you
Then suddenly I got that old-time feeling
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
It's hard to know another's lips will kiss you
And hold you just the way I used to do
Oh, heaven only knows how much I miss you
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
