This song was written in Hawaii as Graham & David had just a few hours before their flight back to Los Angeles. Graham was buying some grass from a a cheeky dweeb named Spider who said, "You're supposed to be some big-time songwriter. I'll bet you can't write a song before you go." Graham says, "Oh yeah? How much?" Spider says, "A hundred bucks" Forty minutes later Graham had written in a school composition book this song that became CSN's biggest hit that thay had had in twenty weeks. The composition book with the original manuscript is housed in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (There are other editions of the details that inspired this song.) |
Am Em F Dm 2x
Am Em
Just a song before I go,
F Dm
to whom it may concern.
Am Em
Travelling twice the speed of sound,
F Dm
it's easy to get burned.
C Bb
When the shows were over,
Dm Em
we had to get back home
C Bb
And when we opened up the door,
Dm F G
I had to be alone.
Am Em
She helped me with my suitcase,
F Dm
she stands before my eyes
Am Em
Driving me to the airport,
F Dm
and to the friendly skies.
C Bb
Going through security,
Dm Em
I held her for so long.
C Bb
She finally looked at me in love,
Dm F G
and she was gone.
Am Em F Dm 2x
Am Em
Just a song before I go,
F Dm
a lesson to be learned.
Am Em
Travelling twice the speed of sound,
F Dm
It's easy to get burned.
